What courses are in the Medical Coding program?

The following courses are included in the Medical Coding program. Courses are released one at a time to maximize learning. The Medical Coding program has a total of 27 credit hours.

MED 101 Introduction to Health Care 1 Credit Hour
  An overview of the evolution of medicine, the role of allied health professionals and the different medical specialties.  
 
BUS 100 Skills for Success 2 Credit Hours
  This course assists a learner who is entering or reentering college. Students have opportunities for practicing skills necessary for success in school, as well as strategies for time management, communication, and balancing work/life responsibilities. Its intent is to prepare students for academic and professional success.  
 
ENG 101 Business English 3 Credit Hours
  A comprehensive study covering grammar, editing, writing and usage skills vital to successful written communication. This course is designed to assist students with the mechanics of writing and to improve their ability to write clearly.
 
MED 102 Essentials of Medical Terminology 3 Credit Hours
  An exploration of the systems of the human body including the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems as well as reproductive, integumentary, blood/lymph, endocrine and nervous systems and how they relate to each other. In addition, some of the most common diseases and disorders affecting these systems and the treatments for them are discussed.  
 
MED 104 Medical Office Procedures 4 Credit Hours
  Administrative procedures utilized in a healthcare office setting covering communications, appointment scheduling and record keeping. Students utilize Medisoft, medical office software, for patient account transactions.  
 
MED 103 Anatomy and Physiology 4 Credit Hours
  A comprehensive study of the structure and function of the human body systems. Students will understand the components of each system, and how systems relate to each other. Special emphasis is on the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and reproductive (male and female) systems.
 
MCB 102 Medical Coding I 2 Credit Hours
  An introduction to the field of medical coding and compliance for physician practices. Course provides practice in linking diagnosis and procedure codes correctly utilizing the CPT and ICD-9-CM.
 
MCB 103 Medical Coding II 2 Credit Hours
  A study of outpatient medical coding procedures utilizing the CPT and ICD-9-CM. Practice in coding diagnoses and procedures for patient account records. Prerequisite: MCB 102
 
MCB 104 Medical Coding III 3 Credit Hours
  A continuation of the study and application of medical coding procedures.
 
BUS 102 Career Exploration 3 Credit Hours
  An introduction to the world of work covering labor market information, career planning, job search techniques, resume preparation, interviewing skills and questions, and correspondence.
