Essentials of Medical Terminology |

This course is an exploration of the systems of the human body including the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems, as well as reproductive, integumentary, blood/lymph, endocrine and nervous systems and how they relate to each other. In addition, some of the most common diseases and disorders affecting these systems and the treatments for them are
discussed.

Anatomy and Physiology |

This course provides a comprehensive
study of the structure and function of the human body systems. Students will acquire core
knowledge in the components of each system, and how systems relate to each other. Special
emphasis is on the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and
reproductive (male and female) systems.

Basic Medical Coding |

An introduction to medical coding in physician practices. The ICD-9-CM and CPT are covered. Students apply
the concepts by completing coding exercises. Strategies for coding compliance are also addressed.

Medical Billing I |

An introduction to the field of medical insurance billing and reimbursement including insurance payment methods, HIPAA and the legal medical record, the billing and reimbursement cycle, physician coding and compliance, and claims
processing. In this course, students learn to use software for electronic medical records implementation. |

Medical Billing II |

A continuation of the study of medical insurance billing and reimbursement including health care payers such as Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, TRICARE and CHAMPVA. Worker’s Compensation, disability and hospital billing are also addressed. In this course, students learn to use software for electronic medical records
implementation. Prerequisite: MBL 101

Medical Coding I |

Medical Coding I and Medical Coding II are companion courses. Students study the purpose and use of the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) (or International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision, Clinical Modification, ICD-10-CM, and International Classification of
Diseases 10th Revision, Procedure Classification System ICD-10-PCS) classification system. Topics include coding conventions, coding principles, and CMS official coding guidelines (inpatient and outpatient). Students will be required to assign ICD-9-CM (or ICD-10-CM/PCS) coding manual and a computerized encoder is incorporated; inpatient, outpatient, and physician office reimbursement systems is discussed. |

 Diploma and Degree Credit Transferability
Graduates of this program earn 18 college credit hours which may be applied toward Brighton College's diploma programs in medical coding or billing or the Associate Degree in Health Services Management.
